First Quantum Minerals Partners with MECS for Kansanshi Mine Expansion

Global mining company, First Quantum Minerals, has recently announced a partnership with MECS, a subsidiary of Elessent Clean Technologies, for the expansion of the Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, Zambia. This collaboration aims to implement the latest MECS technology to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the mining operation.

As part of the project, the existing sulfur-burning sulfuric acid plant at Kansanshi Mine will be transformed into a copper smelter off-gas recovery sulfuric acid plant. This shift in technology will not only reduce emissions from the copper smelter but also increase production at the mine. By adopting greener practices, First Quantum aims to meet their commitment to sustainability and contribute to a cleaner global supply chain of copper and gold.

The MECS sulfuric acid design incorporates innovative products and technologies, including low-emission MECS catalysts, superior mist eliminators from Brink®, and reliable UniFlo® acid distributor technology. These advancements will not only optimize operations but also ensure operational reliability and efficiency.

The expansion of the Kansanshi Mine and the transition to a smelter off-gas recovery sulfuric acid plant mark a crucial step in extending the mine’s lifespan. By prioritizing environmentally sound practices, First Quantum is demonstrating its dedication to sustainable mining operations.

In addition to the environmental benefits, this expansion will also have a positive economic impact on the region. The increased capacity will allow First Quantum to better serve its clients and contribute to a more competitive global supply chain of copper and gold.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Kansanshi Mine expansion project with First Quantum. This partnership not only extends the life of the mine but also enables us to make a significant positive impact on the environment by reducing emissions,” said Eli Ben-Shoshan, CEO of Elessent Clean Technologies.

The startup of the Kansanshi Smelter Expansion is expected to take place in 2025, bringing new possibilities for sustainable mining practices and economic growth to the region.
